Where our data comes from
Every source, what we use it for, and — the part almost nobody publishes — whether its licence actually permits us to republish it commercially.
The architecture
Rented data. Live prices and market caps. Licensed, attributed, and never our moat. If the licence lapses, the number disappears and the site still works.
Derived facts. Whether an exchange quotes SOL against AUD. What a statute says. When a chain forked. These are verifiable facts about the world, not somebody’s data feed, and recording them is what this site is for.
Owned data. Our risk-score snapshots, our change log, our incident case files. Nobody can sell us this and nobody can backfill it. It exists only because we started recording on the first day.
Our risk-score snapshots, the change log, incident case files, and the laws database.
- Access
- owned
- Licence
- Ours. The risk-score archive and change log cannot be bought or backfilled — they exist only because we started recording on day one.

The prices, 24h changes, volumes and coin ranking you see on this site. We compute them ourselves as a volume-weighted aggregate across public exchange feeds (binance.us, Bitstamp, and more over time).
- Access
- free — public exchange endpoints
- Licence
- An aggregate we calculate from public market data is our own derived figure. This is the strongest licensing position available and it costs nothing. It is why our price layer needs no aggregator subscription.
- Note
- What we do NOT get this way is circulating supply, and therefore market capitalisation. That stays an optional enrichment. The reference spine does not depend on it.
Licence verified 11 July 2026
Optional metadata enrichment only: circulating supply, market cap, all-time highs, genesis dates and coin images. NOT our price source — see the exchange-native aggregate above.
- Access
- free keyless (preview only) / paid plan for commercial use
- Licence
- Every aggregator — CoinGecko, CoinMarketCap, CoinPaprika, CoinCodex — licenses its FREE tier for personal, non-commercial use only. Commercial republication is the paid product. So market-cap figures are shown only in preview; at commercial launch they are either dropped or sourced under a paid licence. Nothing load-bearing depends on this.
- Attribution
- Supply and market-cap data provided by CoinGecko
- Note
- Used behind COINGECKO_API_KEY, and only while the site is in preview. The price layer was deliberately moved OFF CoinGecko so that no paid subscription is required to go live. Buying a plan later would restore market-cap display; it is not a blocker.

- Note
- We ingest the feed to know WHAT to research. Nothing sourced from it is published. Every incident on our tracker is independently sourced and marked licence_ok.

Confirming WHETHER an exchange lists a given coin against a given fiat currency. We record the listing FACT, never the exchange’s prices.
- Access
- free keyless (varies; Binance global returns 451 and Bybit 403 from many hosts)
- Licence
- Most exchange ToS (CoinJar, Swyftx, Independent Reserve, BTC Markets) bar redistribution of their market data. A listing fact — "Independent Reserve quotes SOL/AUD" — is a verifiable fact about the world, not their data feed.
- Attribution
- Listing facts verified against each exchange’s public market endpoint
- Note
- This distinction is deliberate and is the reason our exchange-coin matrix is defensible while a live price mirror would not be.
